Patriarch of Africa praises support for Greek Cypriot expatriates
The Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa Theodoros II visited President Nicos Anastasiades at the presidential palace on Monday morning where he briefed the president on his missionary works across Africa.
“Today I had the opportunity to inform the president on our mission in 54 states across Africa with hundreds of schools and hospitals, for all people without any exceptions.” He told reporters after his meeting.
Also attending the meeting was Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou, to whom the Patriarch expressed his gratitude, describing him as “the person that stands by the expatriates of Hellenism in Cyprus, Greece and our works in Egypt.”
He said a conference of expatriates which took place there was a huge success, the Patriarchate said, thanking Photiou for it.
Anastasiades said that a cultural centre being constructed in Geri would have the financial support of the state. According to Photiou, this will cater for the thousands of Cypriots returning back to Cyprus from Africa, which total 35,000 to date.
Photiou said the efforts the Patriarch undertakes are extremely important as “we’re talking about a dangerous region here, not just Egypt and Alexandria but very difficult countries.”
