First legal challenges expected over watchdog’s ruling to remove religious affiliation from pupils’ documents

Reactions arose this week in Greece following a decision by the Hellenic Data Protection Authority (HDPA), an independent watchdog authority in the country, which ruled that the listing of a secondary pupil’s religious affiliation and citizenship on diplomas, certificates and on a ministry IT system is unconstitutional. The authority also claimed that the listing contravenes tenants of the European Convention on Human Rights.
According to reports received by the Orthodoxia news agency, several legal challenges will be filed in the next few days against the specific ruling by the independent authority. Additionally, concern has also reportedly been expressed by the Church of Greece’s hierarchy.
