Feature today on roofless mountain cave Chapel of Panagia Kakaviotissa, on Limnos island
A feature is posted today on the pages of the Orthodoxia news agency featuring the Panagia Kakaviotissa Chapel, which is located atop a mountainous cave on the northeast Aegean island of Limnos, and near the village Evgati.
Orthodox monks from the nearby island of Aghios (saint) Efstratios arrived on the bigger isle in the late 13th century to escape raids by Ottoman pirates. The Chapel was built at the remote site to offer protection from such raids.
Every year, a Divine Liturgy is celebrated at the Chapel two days after Easter, where icon of the Panagia Kakaviotissa is venerated.
The Chapel is considered one of the few, if not the only, purpose-built roofless churches in the world.
