Archbishop Elpidophoros Visits St. Markella Church
His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America yesterday, July 13, 2025, visited St. Markella Greek Orthodox Church in Wantagh, New York to preside over a Divine Liturgy for the Sunday of the Holy Fathers of the Fourth Ecumenical Synod in Chalcedon. Serving alongside His Eminence was parish priest Rev. Fr. George Kolios.
“This council gave a definition for the Human and Divine natures of our Lord Jesus Christ. This definition secures the Christian Faith forever by its wise and balanced understanding of the Theanthropos—the God-Man Jesus Christ,” the Archbishop said in his homily. “Sometimes it is difficult to study these definitions, because they were formulated so long ago, and in a philosophical age so very different from our own.”
The Archbishop emphasized that the definitions of the Seven Councils remain the standard for what the Orthodox Church believes and teaches. Although the language has developed over centuries as needed, the essence of the teachings has not changed—as it “represents the “eternal nature of the Living God.”
Following the Divine Liturgy a reception was held for Archbishop Elpidophoros and the faithful of the community.
