‘Hairline cracks’ affecting Haghia Sofia, Turkish mass daily reports
The mass Turkish daily “Milliyet” this week posted an article citing Turkish experts’ concerns over hairline cracks discovered at the Haghia Sophia Cathedral, which today serves as a museum in the Bosporus metropolis.
The experts were quoted as saying that without restoration measures, the cracks could expand and endanger the entire structure in the long term. Heavy road traffic passing outside the iconic sixth century Christian Orthodox Cathedral has been cited as one of the reasons for the structural stress.
