Negative fallout continues over British Museum’s latest shoddy treatment of Parthenon Marbles
Several Greek visitors to the British Museum in London were shocked to see mold and humidity in one of its most famous halls, where the Parthenon Marbles are displayed. The tourists from Greece took pictures of the substandard museum conditions, which were then widely reproduced by Greek and international media.
In 2018, water leaked from the hall’s roof, after a particularly heavy rainfall. As a result, water dripped next to the sculpture of Iris.
In a bid to downplay the latest example of the British Museum’s shoddy maintenance of the marble friezes, which were sliced off the Parthenon by a notorious British diplomat in the early 19th century, the Museum said all measures are being taken.
A reaction by the Greek culture ministry was immediate, with relevant minister Lina Mendoni noting that the situation, as presented in the relative photographs, is “…very frustrating for the British Museum and extremely offensive against the exhibits, especially when the exhibits are the Parthenon Marbles.”
She added…”The images of abandonment presented by the British Museum reinforce Greece’s rightful demand for a permanent return of the Marbles to Athens, and their reunification with the Parthenon.”
In a statement to the London correspondent of Athens-based Skai TV, a Museum spokesman said “there is no evidence of mold in the Duveen Gallery.”
