The Church today venerates the memory of Sophia and her three daughters: Pistis, Elpis, and Agape, which in English translates into Faith, Hope and Love.

Mother and daughters were born in second century Italy, during the reign of the Emperor Hadrian. Pistis was 12 years old, Elpida 10, and Apage 9. All three were tortured and then beheaded, from the eldest to the youngest, for the their Christian faith

Their mother Sophia mourned at their grave for three days, where she fell asleep in peace. Because of her courageous endurance in the face of her daughters’ sufferings, she is also counted a martyr.
