Thessaloniki: Hierarchical Divine Liturgy and Six-month Memorial for the Late Metropolitan Anthimos
On Sunday (after the Exaltation of the Precious Cross), 21 September, at the Pilgrimage Church of Saint Dimitrios, the Patron of Thessaloniki, a Hierarchical Concelebration of the Divine Liturgy was held, presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol and concelebrated by the local Shepherd, His Eminence Metropolitan Philotheos of Thessaloniki, with the participation of the Abbot of the Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos, Archimandrite Ephraim, as well as clergy from other Holy Metropolises. In the Holy Sanctuary, His Eminence Metropolitan Damaskinos of Velestino also joined in prayer.
From early in the morning, the spacious Pilgrimage Church of Saint Dimitrios was filled with a large congregation that flocked to take part in the Sunday Eucharistic Gathering.
The homily was delivered by the Abbot, Archimandrite Ephraim, on the day’s Gospel reading (Mark 8:34–9:21), in which he spoke about the presence of the Precious Cross in the personal life of every Christian and the love that should be shown to the Crucified Jesus Christ.
Before the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, the six-month memorial service was celebrated for the late Metropolitan Anthimos of Thessaloniki, who shepherded the local Church for 20 years.
Before the Dismissal, the local Shepherd, Metropolitan Philotheos, thanked Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol, as well as Abbot Ephraim of the Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi, for their presence, along with the other clergy who concelebrated. Metropolitan Philotheos also spoke with words of respect regarding the late Metropolitan Anthimos.
