Greece: Culture minister calls on all member states at UNESCO to support reunification of Parthenon Sculptures
Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni reiterated the unwavering stance of the Kyriakos Mitsotakis government on the reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures, calling all member states to support Greece’s national goal, during her intervention in the biennial UNESCO General Assembly meeting.
According to a ministry statement, the meeting is being held in Samarkand, the first time away from the Organisation’s home base. “We firmly believe that the Sculptures of the Parthenon must be reunited at their land of birth, in Athens, at the Acropolis Museum, as an indivisible artistic entity.
As the symbol of Western Civilization, the Parthenon must regain its integrity. We call on all UNESCO member states to provide their support to this just and deeply symbolic purpose,” Mendoni said.
The Culture minister also referred to the recognition by UNESCO of February 9 as World Greek Language Day, and thanked all states that supported the process. “The celebration of the Greek language is, above all, a celebration of multilinguism,” Mendoni said, also expressing her appreciation of the work of outgoing UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, and congratulating incoming Khaled El-Enany for his election.
