The feast of Saint Demetrios the Great Martyr at the Patriarchate
On Saturday, 26 October / 8 November 2025, the Patriarchate celebrated the feast of Saint Demetrios the Glorious Great Martyr and Myrrh-Gusher at his chapel, situated at the boundary between the Central Monastery and the School of Saint Demetrios.
On this feast, the Church honours Saint Demetrios, a native and teacher of Thessaloniki, as the one who strengthened Nestor to contend against the impious Lyaeus, and as the martyr who endured many sufferings for Christ, even unto death by the sword, as did also his disciple Nestor.
In his honour, Great Vespers was held the evening before in the above-mentioned chapel, presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Joachim of Helenoupolis and President of the School Board of Saint Demetrios School; and on the following morning the Divine Liturgy was celebrated, likewise presided over by His Eminence, concelebrated by the keepr of the Church order Archimandrite Alexios, Archimandrite Claudios, Archimandrite Kallistos, and Hierodeacon Prodromos. The students of the Patriarchal School of Zion chanted under their teacher, Ioannis Karanikolas and under the supervision of the keeper of the Church order, Archimandrite Alexios.
During the Divine Liturgy, His Beatitude, our Father and Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos, visited the church for veneration, accompanied by Holy Sepulchre Fathers.
After the Dismissal of the Divine Liturgy, the School of Saint Demetrios, adjacent to the church, offered a reception, attended by His Beatitude, His Eminence Joachim, the teachers and students of the School, and many of the faithful.
