The Church today venerates the memory of Hierotheos the Thesmothete, considered as the first bishop of Christians in Athens. The title thesmothete means ruler, or rule-setter. He was instructed in the faith of Christ by the Apostle Paul, who baptized and ordained him, in the year 53.
