Archbishop Nikodemus of Nigeria officiates memorial for mother of Fr. Chrysostom Onyekakeyah
On February 28, the Community of St. John Chrysostom Orthodox Station under the jurisdiction of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa, Archdiocese of Nigeria, was deeply honored to welcome the presence of their local hierarch, His Eminence Archbishop Nikodemus of Nigeria to UmuoforOwu Amakohia in Ikeduru Imo State, where he officiated the One-Year Memorial Service of the late Mrs. Regina Iheoma Onyekakeyah, beloved mother of Fr. Chrysostom Onyekakeyah, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America’s Mission and Outreach Development Project Coordinator .
His Eminence’s presence brought together the clergy, faithful and family to celebrate a life well-lived and pray together in faith for the repose of her soul. The visit also provided a spiritual refreshment to this growing Orthodox community which was originally established by Fr. Chrysostom Onyekakeyah following his ordination to the priesthood in Imo State, and thereby reinforcing their unique identity within the broader Metropolis of Nigeria.
In his sermon, Archbishop Nikodemus assured the faithful of their saving hope in the resurrection and eternal life in Christ. Mrs. Regina’s legacy lives on through her son’s dedicated service to the Church and the countless lives she touched with her kindness and piety.
Undoubtedly, the pastoral visit of His Eminence to this Orthodox Station successfully fulfilled a dual purpose: honoring the memory of Mrs. Regina IheomaOnyekakeyah and strengthening the bonds of faith within the Orthodox community in the region, even as they navigate the difficult and challenging journey of their Christian witness in Nigeria.
May her memory be eternal!
