Memorial Service for the Heroes of the EOKA Liberation Struggle (1955-59) in Adelaide
The Cyprus Community of South Australia commemorated the anniversary of the commencement of the Liberation Struggle of the National Organisation of Cypriot Fighters (Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston – EOKA) 1955–1959 with the celebration of a memorial service for the repose of the souls of the heroic fighters of faith, homeland, and freedom.
The struggle of EOKA was the last great epic of our Nation and enriched our history and traditions with heroic figures and acts of self-sacrifice. The young men, who shed their blood for freedom and for the union of Cyprus with the motherland Greece, stand as an example for younger generations of self-denial and devotion to the ideals of the Nation.
The memorial service was held on Sunday, 29 March 2026, by His Grace Bishop Silouan of Adelaide at the Archiepiscopal Church of St Sophia (Holy Wisdom).
In his address, His Grace conveyed the blessings of our Chief Shepherd, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, and reflected on the sacrifices of the young men who chose death over youth. He also spoke of their steadfast faith in Christ, which guided them in their struggle for union with the Motherland. Concluding, he offered prayers for the liberation of the occupied territories of our beloved Cyprus.
