Archbishop Nikitas Celebrates Palm Sunday in Birmingham
On Palm Sunday, 5 April 2026, at the Church of the Holy Trinity and St Luke in Birmingham, His Eminence Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain presided at Matins and celebrated the Divine Liturgy.
Concelebrating with His Eminence was the Revd Protopresbyter Christos Stefanou, while the Revd Archdeacon George Tsourous and Deacon Catalin Constantis served.
In his sermon, His Eminence reflected on the significance of Palm Sunday as the threshold of Holy Week – a moment that reveals both the glory and the paradox of Christ’s kingship. He spoke of the crowds who welcomed Christ into Jerusalem with palm branches and cries of “Hosanna”, yet within days would turn away. This, he noted, serves as a mirror to the human heart, called not to fleeting enthusiasm but to steadfast faithfulness. The Archbishop encouraged the faithful to accompany Christ not only in triumph, but also in His Passion, so as to share fully in the joy of the Resurrection.
At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, His Eminence blessed and distributed small crosses woven from palm leaves to the faithful, according to the custom of the day, as a reminder of Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem.
A community meal followed, organised by the Philoptochos Committee, offering the faithful the opportunity to gather and continue the celebration in a spirit of fellowship.
