Commemoration of Saint Methodios, Patriarch of Constantinople, on Antigoni, Princes’ Islands
His Eminence Elder Metropolitan Dimitrios of the Princes’ Islands presided over the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, 14 June, at the Community Church of Saint John the Forerunner on the Island of Antigoni, in the Province of the Princes’ Islands, on the feast of Saint Methodios the Confessor, the glorious Patriarch of Constantinople, whose prison cell, sanctified by his venerable confinement there, has for centuries been located beneath the church.
Present in prayer during the Divine Liturgy were Ambassador Konstantinos Koutras, Consul General of Greece in Constantinople, together with his wife and his associates, Dr Georgios Mamalos and Ms Dimitra Vourdoglou.
At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, His Eminence spoke about the sacred and historic figure of Saint Methodios, highlighting his sacrificial contribution to the restoration of the veneration of the holy icons in 842, following the long and self-destructive period of Iconoclasm.
The Metropolitan also welcomed the Ambassador and his entourage and, on behalf of all present, extended once again his wishes for a speedy recovery to the President of the Church Committee of Antigoni Island, Archon and musicologist Antonios Parizianos, who was present and had recently undergone a health trial.
A reception followed in the courtyard of the church, together with a festive luncheon marking the beginning of the summer season, generously offered by Archon Marios Iliadis, Vice-President of the Church Committee.
Furthermore, on the afternoon of Friday, 12 June, His Eminence the Metropolitan, at the invitation of Mr Cüneyt Ergünenç, Director of Education for the Islands, attended a fashion show held in the halls of the Anadolu Kulübü on Prinkipo. The event was organised by graduating students of the Fashion Design Department (Moda Tasarım Bölümü) of the Aydın Foundation University.
It is noteworthy that this artistic event took place within the framework of the department’s educational vision of environmental and cultural responsibility and bore the title “Yedi Tepeden Dokuz Adaya: Prens Adaları” (“From the Seven Hills to the Princes’ Islands”).
