Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria Visits Nea Kios in Argolis
With ecclesiastical splendour, the Holy Metropolis of Argolis welcomed His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa to the Asia Minor refugee town of Nea Kios on Sunday, 6 September.
The Patriarch visited Argolis in response to the gracious invitation of the Ambassador of Greece to Egypt, Mr Nikolaos Papageorgiou, who was born in Nea Kios.
The visit of the Primate of the ancient Patriarchate of Alexandria to Nea Kios constituted a particularly significant ecclesiastical event and a great honour for the local Church and the faithful people of Argolis.
On Sunday morning, His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros, accompanied by His Eminence Metropolitan Georgios of Guinea, his representative and Director of the Office of the Patriarchate of Alexandria in Athens, and the local Shepherd, His Eminence Metropolitan Nektarios of Argolis, celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Church of Saint Irene.
At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, the Patriarch of Alexandria celebrated a memorial service for those who fell during the Asia Minor Catastrophe. Local authorities, Members of Parliament for Argolis and a large number of faithful were present. During the sacred services, the responses were chanted by a choir under the direction of Dimitrios Karkalatos, Protopsaltis of the Metropolitan Church and President of the Association of Chanters of Argolis.
Following the services, refreshments were offered by the Parish Council of the Church of Saint Irene in Nea Kios. The Parish Priest, Protopresbyter Fr Demosthenis Gatsios, together with Fr Ilias Gatsios, warmly thanked the Patriarch of Alexandria for the honour of visiting Nea Kios. They also expressed their gratitude to the Greek Ambassador, Mr Nikolaos Papageorgiou, who facilitated the Patriarchal visit, as well as to Metropolitan Nektarios of Argolis for granting his blessing for this exceptional visit of the Patriarch to the region.
During his stay, His Beatitude also visited the city of Nafplio and the historic Church of the Theomana–Hodegetria in the central square of Nea Kios. There, Fr Demosthenis Gatsios guided the Patriarch through the church, where he viewed the sacred icons that were rescued from the Asia Minor Catastrophe and which today constitute an important ecclesiastical treasure of the local Church of Argolis.
