Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Chichester
His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Theology by the University of Chichester on Wednesday, 16 September, during the University’s official graduation ceremony for this year’s graduates, which was held at the city’s Anglican Cathedral.
His All-Holiness was welcomed with an address by the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Mr Symeon Dagkas, who is of Greek descent, while the Acting Bishop of the vacant Anglican Diocese of Chichester, His Grace Bishop William Hazlewood, was also present at the ceremony.
In the address delivered by His All-Holiness in English, drawing upon personal experiences from his life and his twenty years of studies, the Ecumenical Patriarch offered words of spiritual edification to the young graduates, who, with their graduation, are now embarking upon a new chapter in their lives.
At midday, His All-Holiness blessed the luncheon hosted in his honour by the Acting Bishop of the Diocese and the leadership of the University at the nearby Bishop’s residence in Chichester. The Patriarch was warmly welcomed and honoured with addresses by Bishop William Hazlewood and the Chancellor of the University, Dr Tim Fooks, to which His All-Holiness responded appropriately.
