Romania allows Pascha services amidst rise in COVID cases
Following a meeting with religious representatives yesterday, Romanian authorities announced that Pascha services will be open to the public, despite the current surge in COVID infections.
“The solution that we are going with is to adapt the timeframe of restrictions so believers can physically attend the Resurrection Service or the holidays of each religious group and still respect health and safety rules,” Prime Minister Florin Cîțu announced, reports the Basilica News Agency.
The faithful were not permitted to attend Pascha services last year. Social distancing and masks will be required this year for the services to be open.
“The specific elements regarding the organization and conduct of this year’s Pascha service will be communicated by both the Romanian Patriarchate and the state authorities after they have been agreed upon in detail,” said Vasile Bănescu, the Patriarchate spokesman.
The announcement came as Romania reported its highest number of daily COVID infections in three months, and hospital ICUs reported their highest number of patients since the start of the pandemic, reports the Associated Press.
