Govt initiative reportedly eyes merger of three ecclesiastical academies in Greece

An exclusive report by the Orthodoxia news agency, whereby the relevant education and religious affairs ministry in Greece is promoting a legislative initiative to essentially abolish three higher ecclesiastical academies operating under the auspices of the Church of Greece, has generated heightened concern and questions.

According to the latest reports, the draft bill will be first presented to the permanent Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Church of Greece this week.

In a bid to preclude possible reactions, press reports quoting ministry sources claimed that the academies – in Athens, Thessaloniki and Ioannina – will not be abolished, per se, but will be merged with other academic institutions.
