Funeral of Archbishop of Australia Stylianos on Sat.

Greek Orthodox faithful flocked to the Annunciation Cathedral in Sydney this week, where the body of the late Archbishop of Australia, Stylianos, lay in state.

In Rethymno, Crete, the birthplace of the late hierarch, a period of mourning was declared, with flags flying at half-staff at churches and monasteries. A funeral toll will be rung at Rethymno-area churches during the funeral procession in Australia – which will take place on Saturday, March 30, at 11.30 a.m. local time.

The service will be broadcast live on the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia’s Youtube and Facebook pages.

In a related development, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, this week referred to the future of the Archdiocese, namely, whether it will remain as a unified ecclesiastical jurisdiction or be divided on the island continent.

Australia hosts significant Greek Orthodox communities, although the distances between them are considerable.
