Tom Hanks: ‘take me to Hellas’
Well-known Hollywood actor and producer Tom Hanks again showed his love of Greece this week, taking to social media to post a photograph of a T-shirt that reads: “… take me to Hellas”, the name for Greece in Greek.
The two-time Oscar-winning movie star was baptized into the Orthodox faith in 1988, when he married fellow Hollywood actress and producer Rita Wilson, who grew up in the Greek Orthodox faith.
The Hanks family attends the St. Sophia Orthodox Church in Los Angeles, and Tom Hanks has often served as a pallbearer of the epitaphios, a large, embroidered and richly adorned icon that bears the image of the dead body of Christ, paraded during the annual Good Friday procession.
In a previous interview, Hanks said that “… I consider Greek Orthodoxy my own spiritual heritage. I got married in the same church where my wife had been baptized. My children were baptized in the same baptismal font as my wife.”
