A pediatric bone marrow transplant unit founded by the Association of Friends of Children with Cancer, known as “Elpida”, Greek for hope, this year celebrates 26 years of operation. Since its inception the unit has successfully treated more than 1,000 children that would have, otherwise, had to travel abroad.

In honor of the unit’s 26 years of operation, the Athens University’s medical school this month bestowed an honorary doctorate to philanthropist Marianna Vardinogianni, the founder of the Association.

President of the Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos was present at the event.
