The northwest Peloponnese town of Kalavryta on Monday celebrated the 201st anniversary of its liberation from Ottoman rule, as it was the first major community that threw off Turkish yoke during eruption of the Greek War of Independence in March 1821.

A Doxology service was held at the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Theotokos, officiated by the Metropolitan of Kozani, His Eminence Pavlos, and the Metropolitan of Grevena, His Eminence David, as both hierarchs were invited to the con-celebratory service by the resident Metropolitan of Kalavryta, His Eminence Ieronymos.

A trisagion prayer service and the laying of wreaths followed at a memorial for the fallen.
