Ukrainian President Zelensky addresses Greece’s Parliament on Thur.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, at noon Athens time, addressed Greece’s Parliament and political leaders via video link.
Among others, the Ukrainian leader emphasized, “…People of Greece, good morning …Death or Freedom, as your revolutionaries declared – this is what we are asserting today.”
He also referred extensively to his land’s historic ties with Hellenism and to the besieged Sea of Azov port city of Mariupol, while pleading for the establishment of a new “Filiki Eteria”, Greek for Society of Friends, the early 19th century revolutionary organization, in order preserve the ethnic Greek communities of Ukraine after the war.
Zelensky’s address came in the presence of Greek President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, among others.
In a related development, Athens will request from the International Court of Justice at The Hague the investigation of possible war crimes in Mariupol, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said on Thursday, upon arrival at a summit of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels.
Dendias reminded that Greece has a special interest in the southeast Ukrainian city, due to the existence of an ethnic Greek community of more than 100,000 people in the wider Mariupol region.
