Holy Community of Mt. Athos issues announcement over tragedy of war in Ukraine, days before Ecumenical Patriarch’s visit
The Holy Community of Mount Athos, the venerable semi-autonomous monastic community in northern Greece, this week issued an announcement regarding the tragedy of war in Ukraine.
The announcement comes only a days before the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, is due to visit Mount Athos.
The Holy Community expressed its deep sorrow, as the statement notes, over the loss of so many lives, extending its support to the victims of the conflict and praying ceaselessly for peace in the world, especially for the war-ravaged areas.
Before arriving at the remote monastic community on Friday, His All Holiness will visit the municipality of Nea Propontida, in nearby Halkidiki prefecture, where he will be declared an honorary citizen during a ceremony where a town square will also be named in the Ecumenical Patriarch’s honor.
