Announcement by the Holy Synod of Church of Greece regarding Archbishopric of Ohrid
The Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece this week issued a relevant announcement regarding the recent renewal of Eucharistic communion between the Orthodox world and the now canonical Archbishopric of Ohrid.
Hierarchs of the Church of Greece first expressed their satisfaction over the Patriarchal letter conveyed by His All Holiness Bartholomew I, referring to a “calming” of the Holy Clergy and pious Greek faithful, while also meeting expectations over the name of the Orthodox Church in the neighboring, to Greece, country, while adding: “…without the priceless name of Macedonia as an element or derivative, and for the delimitation of its boundaries within this state.”
The Archbishopric of Ohrid now enjoys canonical status within the boundaries of the Republic of North Macedonia, the land-locked state in the southern Balkans that lies due north of the Greek province of Macedonia, the area that approximates to historical Macedonia of antiquity and covers more than half of geographical Macedonia.
The Holy Synod, however, cautioned against the use of the derivative “Macedonia”, as was employed by the Serbian Patriarchate.
