Russian Patriarch Kirill: ‘Most significant weapon a person retains is internal, spiritual strength’
Wednesday, June 22, marked the 81st anniversary of the insidious German invasion of the then Soviet Union, today called the “Day of Memory and Sorrow” in Russia.
As part of commemorative and memorial events, the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, His Holiness Kirill, laid a wreath, on behalf of the Russian Orthodox Church, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow. The site is located within the Kremlin Wall in the Alexander Garden.
In a later address, the Primate of the Russian Church noted that “…we know that the Orthodox faith inspires us to defend our homeland. Protection of the people is not only achieved with military power, because the most significant weapon a person retains is internal, spiritual strength.”
As part of the series of events on the occasion of the somber commemoration, an evening Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, in Moscow, in memoriam for the victims of the Second World War.
