Resurrection of Christ celebrated by Orthodox faithful around the world; Holy Light from Jerusalem
Thousands of Orthodox worshipers gathered at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem on Holy and Great Saturday for the miraculous lighting of the Holy Light.
On Great Saturday the Orthodox Church contemplates the mystery of the Lord’s descent into Hades, the place of the dead. Death, our ultimate enemy, is defeated from within.
Liturgy of St. Basil recounts: “He (Christ) gave Himself as a ransom to death in which we were held captive, sold under sin. Descending into Hades through the Cross … He loosed the bonds of death”.
The Holy Light is expected be transported by a government executive plane from Tel-Aviv (take-off at 5 p.m. local time) to a military airbase west of Athens, where it will be received with head of state honors. From there it will transported by private helicopter to the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport, and from there to every corner to Greece by plane.
In exclusive comments to the Orthodoxia News Agency, Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Markos Bolaris sent his celebratory message from the Jerusalem Patriarchate’s throne room. He is tasked with accompanying the Holy Light to Greece.
