Queen Elizabeth II, the UK’s longest-serving monarch, passed away on Thursday at Balmoral Castle, at the age of 96. She reigned for 70 years.
According to a Buckingham Palace announcement, Queen Elizabeth died peacefully on Thursday afternoon at her Scottish estate, where she had spent much of the summer.

Her first-born son and heir, King Charles III, said the death of his beloved mother was a “moment of great sadness” for him and his family and that her loss would be “deeply felt” around the world.

The new monarch, to be known as Charles III, and his wife, Camilla, now the Queen Consort, have returned to London. He is expected to address the nation this afternoon.

On the occasion of the somber development, His Eminence Archbishop Nikitas issued an announcement whereby the clergy and faithful of the Holy Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain offer their collective condolences to the royal family and the entire nation for the passing of the beloved and revered sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II.

His Eminence added that Orthodox Christians of the United Kingdom are requested to offer their prayers for the soul of Queen Elizabeth, as well as for the peace, stability, and longevity of the royal family, for civil authorities and all inhabitants of the British Isles.

Halfway around the world, the Archbishop of Australia, His Eminence Makarios, also expressed his condolences on the repose of Queen Elizabeth II.

In a statement, His Eminence noted that “…I express on behalf of the God-loving Bishops, the reverend clergy, and all the faithful of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia, my sincere condolences to the royal family, to the people of Great Britain and, obviously, to the Australian people, who are mourning the loss of a person for whom they have long-standing feelings of esteem and respect.”
