Greek PM Mitsotakis tours St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine in Manhatten
His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America on Thursday welcomed visiting Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center.
The Greek Prime Minister and his entourage were also greeted by Santiago Calatrava, the main design architect of the shrine; the parishes clerics and laity, as well as iconographers of Xenofontos Monastery of Mount Athos.
In his statements, His Eminence thanked Steven Plate, the head of Major Capital Projects for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, who was in attendance. The Archbishop also highlighted the pivotal role of the Friends of St. Nicholas organization, who he said worked very hard under the guidance of Fr. Alex Karloutsos to raise the necessary funds for the completion of the project.
On his part, Mitsotakis thanked His Eminence and shared that he has been following the progress of the site with great interest.
The Greek leader stated “…it is indeed a spectacular building. I would say it’s a building that is fully aligned with the particular spiritual importance of this place and, right next to a site of pain and suffering, a church that symbolizes hope and unity— which will, I am sure, become a landmark of New York and a beacon of hope for everyone who visits.”
