Despite continued and large-scale persecution, attacks and intimidation against Christians in Africa, Orthodoxy on the continent is not only resisting, but growing at impressive rates.

The Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa, along with Greek clergymen and missionaries continue to preach the word of God on the continent, often in the face of substantial threats, as well as baptizing thousands of Christian Orthodox converts and holding religious weddings.

According to recent figures by the Pew research center, the number of Christians in Africa is constantly rising, with this trend expected to continue in the near future.

For instance, three African countries – excluding southern Africa – recorded a large number of Christians in 2015, namely, Nigeria, the Congo and Ethiopia, together totaling 216 million Christians.

In 2060, the Pew center estimates that 727 million Christians will live in Africa, with the biggest increases being in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.

Indicatively, the Orthodox Metropolis of Madagascar reports between 1,300 to 1,500 baptisms of new Orthodox Christians every year.
