British foreign ministry reports cites destruction, persecution faced by remaining Christians in Turkish-occupied Cyprus

On Cyprus, a report this week by the British foreign ministry includes the Turkish-occupied parts of the island republic in the most dangerous places in the world for Christians.

The study cited statements by the president of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK, Christos Karaolis, who provided facts and figures to researchers.

Karaolis touched on the historical framework of Christianity on the large east Mediterranean island, providing proof of persecution and the violation of human rights of Christians still living in areas of Cyprus occupied by the Turkish military.

Among others, he cited the well-documented destruction of churches and cemeteries in the occupied areas, the looting of religious icons and frescoes as well as the obstacles placed on the exercise of religious freedom.
