Russian Church Holy Synod rejects Alexandria Patriarchate’s decision to defrock former’s Metropolitan in Africa

Members of the Russian Orthodox Church’s Holy Synod, under the chairmanship of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, this week issued a decision by which the Moscow Patriarchate considers a recent decision by the Alexandria Patriarchate to defrock the Metropolitan of Klin Leonid as “uncanonical”.

The latter hierarch has been appointed as Exarch of Africa by the Russian Church, something that the Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa considers as an intrusion into its ecclesiastical jurisdiction.

The Holy Synod of the Alexandria Patriarchate in late November announced a suspension of the commemoration, in liturgies, of His Holiness Kirill.

The Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, His Beatitude Theodoros II, also announced a suspension of all communication with the latter, until the intrusion ends and all representatives of the non-canonical Exarchate are recalled.
