Contract signed in Jerusalem for continued restoration works at Church of the Holy Sepulcher  

A contract was signed on Monday in Jerusalem to complete restoration works at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher’s Rotunda, the building of the larger dome located on the far west side. The contract also foreseen continued restoration of the small chapel in the center of the Rotunda, called the Kouvouklion in Greek and Aedicula in Latin.

The contract was signed in the presence of the Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Most Godly Beatitude Theophilos III, and comes two years after a first agreement was signed for the initial phase of restoration of the Kouvouklion – under the supervision of the Athens Polytechnic.

In a statement, the Patriarch said “…Today is a special day, not only for us and our communities – as we are responsible for these Holy Sites – but it is significant for the city of Jerusalem, because everyone here today realizes and acknowledges that it is dependent on us for Jerusalem to retain its Christian character… As such, our mission is very important, not only for religious reasons, but for diplomatic and political reasons as well.”
