Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Holy Synod decides on the new Archbishop of Thyateira and GB and the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto
Two significant decisions were taken on Wednesday by Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Holy Synod, with the Ecumenical Patriarch, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, presiding.
Holy Synod members elected the Metropolitan of the Dardanelles, His Eminence Nikitas, as the new Archbishop of Thyateira and Great Britain.
His Eminence Nikitas has served as the director of the Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute in Berkeley, California, since 2007.
Additionally, the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto will be renamed and upgraded into the Archdiocese of Canada, with the Metropolitan of Toronto to be referred to as the Archbishop of Canada.
Finally, members of the Holy Synod also considered issues affecting the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. Patriarchate officials later underlined that no decisions have been taken, denying various reports in a handful of websites that are creating problems for the Archdiocese, even before the new Archbishop has been enthroned.
