Patriarchate of Georgia releases statement regarding recent developments

Thousands of young people, excited with the love of the country, came out on Rustaveli [avenue] to protect the dignity of their homeland and expressed their fair indignation due to the presence of the member of the Russian Parliament, who supported violation of the territorial integrity of Georgia, the Georgian Patriarchate said in a statement released on Friday.

“It was a mistake of the authorities, which resulted in a peaceful, fair protest of the people, “the statement reads.

“We are heartsore for the last night’s developments on Rustaveli avenue, where many people were injured. Thousands of young people, excited with the love of the country, came out on Rustaveli [avenue] to protect the dignity of their homeland and expressed their fair indignation due to the presence of the member of the Russian Parliament, who supported violation of the territorial integrity of Georgia. It was a mistake of the authorities, which was followed by a peaceful, fair protest of the people. But the demonstration has become dangerous, the events were developed instantly and turned into the attempt to storm the Parliament’s building.

We think it is necessary for government to urgently investigate the reasons and relevant agencies, the media and experts to make an impartial assessment of the incident, as well as of the general-political processes, in order to enable public to understand the current situation, to maintain the process and to avoid a civil confrontation, “the statement reads.
