The Feast of Pentecost at the Patriarchate
On Sunday, 18 / 31 May 2026, the Feast of Pentecost was celebrated in accordance with the New Testament Scriptures, especially the Book of the Acts of the Apostles and the Pentecostarion. The feast commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Holy Disciples and Apostles while they were gathered together with one accord in the same place. The Holy Spirit rested upon each of them “in tongues of fire”, enlightening them, and they spoke “with other tongues” the mighty works of God. At the sound of the “rushing mighty wind”, the multitude gathered together, and the Apostle Peter preached unto them. They were deeply moved, believed, were baptised on that very day, and thus formed the first Christian Church. For this reason, Holy Zion is known as the “Mother of the Churches” (Acts 2:2–3).
On this feast, the Church recalls this sacred event with joy, thanksgiving, and the glorification of God.
In commemoration thereof, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the Holy Sepulchre, presided over by His Beatitude our Father and Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos III. Concelebrating with His Beatitude were their Eminences, Metropolitan Hesychios of Capitolias, the Archbishops Theophanes of Gerrash, Aristarchos of Constantina, Theodosios of Sebastia, Demetrios of Lydda, and Philoumenos of Pella; the Holy Sepulchre Hieromonks, headed by the Elder Kamarasis Archimandrite Nektarios; Priests of the Patriarchate, and representatives of the sister Orthodox Churches of Russia and Romania.
The hymns were chanted by the chief cantor Deacon Efstathios, together with the students of the Patriarchal School under the direction of their instructor, Mr Ioannis Karanikolas. Also, present was the Consul General of Greece in Jerusalem, Mr Dimitrios Angelosopoulos.
The Divine Liturgy was followed by the Kneeling service with the Prayers of Pentecost during the Vespers of the Monday of the Holy Spirit.
Finally, all proceeded to the Patriarchate, where His Beatitude invoked upon all the enlightenment of the all-accomplishing Holy Spirit.
