46th Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress of Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America inaugurated
The 46th Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America convenes today in New York City, under the theme “Legacy, Renewal, Unity”.
The Congress commemorates the centennial of the Archdiocese in America, and falls on the very symbolic date of July 4th, Independence Day.
More than 840 participants from across the United States are registered for the congress, with more than 310 delegates registered for the Philoptochos Convention.
Following the virtual Clergy-Laity congress of 2020, this event will be the first in-person congress convened by the Archbishop of America, His Eminence Elpidophoros, since his enthronement in 2019.
In a statement, His Eminence noted that “…We are coming together … to harness the energy pouring forth from every corner of our Sacred Archdiocese, to put it to good and positive use for the benefit of every parishioner — old and young, cradle and convert – no matter where they live, and no matter who they are.”
His Eminence also dedicated a moment to the memory of late Archbishop Iakovos, who served as the shepherd of the Archdiocese for 37 of its 100 years.
Monday, July 4th, also marked the historic and long-awaited consecration of the St. Nicholas Church and National Shrine at Ground Zero in Manhattan.
The consecration was scheduled to be officiated by His Eminence Geron Metropolitan Emanuel of Chalcedon, who arrived from Constantinople on Sunday to serve as the representative of His All-Holiness, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams, among other dignitaries, were due to be present for the sacred occasion.
A Divine Liturgy was due to begin at 11:30 am EST.
