A year without the late Archbishop Stylianos of Australia
Archbishop Stylianos of Australia died on 25 March, 2019, after a long battle with cancer.
News of his death saddened a large part of the Greek community who will always remember the former archbishop as a fiery hierarch who was, unlike many members of the clergy, not obsessed with conceited extravagance or flashes of wealth.
He was a brilliant mind, veritable poet and did a great deal to organise the Greek education and schools in Australia leaving behind a legacy that will stand for many years to come.
Hundreds flocked to his funeral, however his memorial service was, in stark contrast, a closed affair due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was held by his successor, Archbishop Makarios, at the Cathedral of the Annunciation, Sydney, on Friday.
