Adelaide: Central Philoptochos Book Centre opens new bookstore outlet at St George College
With the blessing of our Father, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, the Central Philoptochos of the Archdiocesan District of Adelaide has been running a highly successful Book Centre with four bookstore outlets selling a rich variety of orthodox books (in Greek and English) for all ages as well as a rich variety of gifts and other Orthodox devotional items such as icons, incense, vigil lamps, censers, prayer ropes, sets of baptismal and wedding items including candles, and much more.
Many of these items are locally and prayerfully made by our own Philoptohos ladies. The four bookstore outlets are housed at the office of our Holy Archdiocese, the Greek Welfare Centre, the Holy Monastery of Saint Nectarios, and the St Spyridon College.
The Book Centre has been a success financially in helping the Archdiocesan District of Adelaide to fundraise in support of its many and various missionary endeavours. But more importantly than the financial success, the bookstore has been highly successful at getting spiritual material into the homes of the faithful and of enquirers.
Tuesday, 1st of November marked an expansion of the Bookstore’s presence into St George College. The small display is prominently located in the foyer of the junior campus, with a good selection of Orthodox children’s books.
The opening ceremony (agiasmo) was led by His Grace Bishop Silouan of Sinope and accompanied by St George chaplain Fr Konstantinos Skoumbourdis along with a few other clergy of our Archdiocese, held in the hall in the presence of school principal Mr Peter Karamoshos together with his staff and a number of parents and other members of the Greek Orthodox community in Adelaide.
His Grace spoke about the importance of spiritual books, and of the Bookstore’s mission to get them into people’s homes at prices that they can afford – even if that means giving them to them for free.
The opening of the St George outlet makes it the fifth bookstore outlet of the Book Centre to open in Adelaide. By God’s Grace, and with blessings and prayers of our Archbishop and Father Makarios, may there be more to come, and may our Lord pour out his blessings on the Book Centre’s mission to get spiritual books into people’s homes and their lives.
