Amb. of Hungary on financial assistance to restore chapels on Lesvos: solidarity towards our Greek friends

The ambassador of Hungary to Greece, Erik Haupt, spoke to the Orthodoxia news agency this week, where he detailed the Budapest government’s standing interest and financial support in restoring vandalized chapels on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos – desecration attributed to groups of third country irregular migrants that were smuggled onto EU territory from Turkey over the previous years.

“We feel anger and we cannot accept, for any reason, the vandalism of places of worship of any religion, Amb. Haupt said.

Asked about the financial assistance offered by the Hungarian government towards repairing and restoring the vandalized chapels, the head of Hungary’s diplomatic mission in Greece emphasized:

“…a few years ago our Prime Minister said that, given that Christian values represent the most significant component of cohesion for the cities and countries of Europe, then the building of churches should be considered akin to building our homes. In reality, the current historical experience has led us to recognize that, along with education, this is a very crucial favor for the life and survival of any community.”
