Annual Agiasmos and cutting of the Vasilopita for the Cretan Association of Sydney and New South Wales
On Friday the 3rd of February, the Cretan Association of Sydney and New South Wales held its annual Agiasmos blessing and cutting of the Vasilopita. Members, friends, dancing groups and parents of the Cretan Association gathered at Ashbury Senior Citizen’s Centre to mark the first gathering for the year. The Cretan Association has a long history with Ashbury Senior Citizen’s Centre, meeting there every Friday night for over 25 years.
The Chancellor of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, Archimandrite Christophoros Krikelis was honoured to attend the event on behalf of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia. Father Christophoros bestowed His Eminence’s blessings to the President of the Cretan Association, Mr Emmanuel Vitetzakis, to the Executive Committee, members, dancing groups and youth. Fr Christophoros highlighted His Eminence’s love for the island of Crete and the Cretan people.
Seeing almost a hundred people in attendance, and in particular a large amount of youth, Father Christophoros congratulated the first generation of Cretan-Australians who established the Cretan Association and have maintained such a strong organisation that has handed down its faith, traditions and customs to the next generation. After receiving Father Christophoros’ blessing, the members of the Cretan Association shared a meal together whilst the dancing groups held their first dancing lesson for the year.
