Apostolos Andreas monastery repairs from lightning to start soon

Repairs of Apostolos Andreas monastery in the breakaway north from recent damage caused by a lightning strike will start soon, according to Greek Cypriot Chairman of the Cultural Heritage Technical Committee Takis Hadjidemetriou.

He also told CNA that the damage’s extent was limited and that it can easily be repaired. After the lightning struck the bell tower had collapsed causing damage to the roof’s tiles.

“We have not estimated the cost of the damage yet, we are still at the stage where experts are looking into the problem…repairs should start soon,” he also said.

The developer is waiting for instructions from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), he added.

In addition, Hadjidemetriou said that three of the Technical Committee’s projects are expected to be completed soon. Specifically, restoration work at Saint Artemonas church in occupied Afania will be completed in early March.

And restoration at St. Andronicos church in Kythrea is expected to be completed by mid-March. At the end of the same month, the second phase of restoration of Virgin Mary temple in occupied Assia, which includes a wall, should also be completed. The Technical Committee expects that the enclosure will help protect the temple from future floods as well.

Apart from these three projects whose completion is near, restoration on the Church of Archangel Michael in occupied Yialoussa and the church of Saints Sergios and Vachos in Ayios Sergios village is ongoing.

At the same time, restoration of the Venetian walls in occupied Nicosia, part of which collapsed last year, is also underway, Hedjidemetriou said.

The restoration of important religious and cultural monuments intends to contribute to the on-going confidence-building process between the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots communities within the context of cultural heritage preservation and protection.
