The Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, on Thursday again revisited the increasingly pressing issue of the Hagia Sophia, as efforts by the Erdogan administration in Turkey to reconvert the iconic monument into a mosque have generated heightened international concern and condemnations by Christians around the world.

Speaking after an extraordinary session of the Permanent Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece, the Primate of the Church of Greece referred to an issue that not only touches pious people, but all civilized individuals.

“The Hagia Sophia is not only a Christian monument built by Justinian, but a world monument with a supreme place in the history of civilization; and where civilization is under attack, the downfall of human dignity follows…”
