Archbishop Makarios of Australia Receives the Royal Australian Mint’s Commemorative Coin honouring the Battle of Crete
A commemorative coin issued by the Royal Australian Mint to mark the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete was recently presented by the Australian Ambassador to Greece, Her Excellency Ms Alison Duncan, to His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia.
Through the initiative to issue this collectible coin, tribute is paid to the enduring bonds forged between Australia and Greece during the historic battle fought on the island of Crete amid the Second World War.
His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, who is himself from Crete, received the commemorative coin with deep emotion.
For her part, Ambassador Duncan acknowledged that the people of Crete, particularly those associated with the Holy Monastery of Preveli, risked even their own lives in order to shelter Australian soldiers, help them avoid capture, and assist them in escaping from the island following the German occupation.
