Archbishop of Athens briefed on ongoing Parliament com’t work on constitutional revision

The lawmaker, elected from the central prefecture of Magnesia, briefed the Archbishop on her participation on a Parliamentary committee tasked with preparing proposals for constitutional revision, proposals that will come up for vote in an upcoming Parliament plenary session.

One proposal for revision, inherited from the previous leftist government, involves Article 3, which delineates Church-state relations in the country. In a related development, Parliament President Costas Tassoulas on Tuesday said the ruling party’s majority of deputies in Parliament will not consent to any revision of Article 3.

Archbishop Ieronymos later received members of a nationwide association of theologians. The meeting comes in the wake of a Council of State decision, ruling that the previous government’s decisions on religious instruction in public schools, were unconstitutional.

In a very public rebuke of the previous leftist government’s policies in the specific sector, a majority of high court justices last week ruled that the development of an Orthodox Christian awareness should be pursued, and that the specific classroom lesson in public schools is directed exclusively towards young people born into the Orthodox faith.
