Archbishop of Athens: Church will again require mandatory use of masks during services, if public health experts advise

The Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, this week left open the possibility of the Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece again requiring the mandatory use of masks by worshippers, during indoor church services and sacraments.

The Archbishop, in an interview with an Athens-based television station, said the measure may be re-instituted, if experts deem it necessary to prevent exposure to the Covid-19 virus.

At the same time, Ieronymos said state authorities must also provide clarifications to Church queries.

Moreover, the Holy Synod has re-issued a previous encyclical reminding all the Holy Metropolises of the Church of Greece of precautions and public health measures still in place for cathedrals and chapels around the country.
