The Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, on Wednesday received UN Goodwill Ambassador and well-known Greek philanthropist Marianna Vardinoyannis at the Archdiocese in the Greek capital.

Vardinoyannis is also the president of the honorary committee of the “Thermopylae-Salamis 2020” Anniversary framework, which will organize and promote events this year to honor of the 25th centennial of the landmark Battles of Thermopylae and Salamis.

The UN Goodwill Ambassador thanked Archbishop Ieronymos for his support and briefed him on the “Thermopylae-Salamis 2020” series of events  – ones commemorating two ancient battles that were not only a crucial milestone for Hellenism, but seminal to the creation of western civilization.

On his part, the Primate of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece praised Vardinoyannis for her prolific charity work, especially with the “Elpida” organization she founded, which for decades has supported families with children battling cancer and raised millions of euros for the creation of a state-of-the-art children’s oncology unit in Athens.
