Archdiocese of America launched centennial celebration
The Archbishop of America, His Eminence Elpidophoros, over the weekend cut the New Year’s “vasilopita” pie – a Greek Orthodox tradition – at the Archdiocesan District Choir Federation at the St. Paraskevi Cathedral in Greenlawn, New York.
In a brief address, His Eminence noted that “…This New Year of 2022 has begun with equal measures of hope and uncertainty because our parishes still face the challenge of navigating the pandemic. We are hopeful, but we must remain vigilant as well”.
He added: “As you all know, this year is the centenary of our Church as the premier Eparchy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. And the centennial celebration will take place right here in New York City during the National Clergy-Laity congress in July. Therefore, I will be looking to the local Federation to work together with the National Forum of Church Musicians, so that the elements of music at the congress will reflect the great traditions that have emerged here in America”.
A day earlier, the Archdiocese of America formally launched the beginning of its 2022 centennial celebrations.
The launch was marked by a special video, which briefly highlights the beginnings of the Archdiocese and its journey over the past 100 years. The video is the first of a series that will be released online in the lead-up to the Clergy-Laity congress which will focus on the historic institutions of the Archdiocese including Hellenic College Holy Cross, the St. Basil Academy, the Ladies Philoptochos Society, Leadership 100, the Archons and many more.
