Belarusian Orthodox Church calls on citizens to observe law
The Belarusian Orthodox Church has issued an address to the people of Belarus amid the street demonstrations, calling on people to observe the public order.
«Take care of yourselves and your relatives and loved ones; don’t give in to provocations and act in the spirit of the law of Christian love and the legislation of the Republic of Belarus,» the press service for the Belarusian Orthodox Church said in a statement released on Thursday.
The statement was issued due to calls made on the Internet for participation in a so-called cross procession of representatives of various Christian denominations with Bibles and icons near the Holy Spirit Cathedral. The press service said this call has no relation to the activities of the Belarusian Orthodox Church.
The press service also said that a special prayer for the people of Belarus has been said in all Orthodox churches with the blessing of the patriarch’s exarch for the past two weeks.
«Our people really need the support of prayer in this crisis; our Orthodox churches are open to all people who want to come and pray, not only during services, but also at any time their hearts desire,» the statement said.
At the same time, its position is «to call on the opposing sides for peace, clemency, and mutual understanding, rather than fueling aggression and inciting various protests,» the statement said.
